Compiled by Robert Luis, Shapes 08:01 is the latest instalment in the must-have series of Tru Thoughts compilations.

This first collection of 2008 is headed in a deeper, more song-based direction, giving a tantalising taster of some of the best current music on the label, including a handful of exclusive releases.
Tru Thoughts have snapped up an incredible array of exciting new talents of late, and this eclectic CD offers a chance to check out some of the latest additions to the roster, alongside a host of more familiar faces such as The Quantic Soul Orchestra, Hot 8 Brass Band, Nostalgia 77, The Bamboos and Alice Russell. The cream of the Zebra Traffic contingent is represented too, with contributions from Up Hygh (including an exclusive Owusu remix of “Be Known”) and Dirty Diggers with “The Goodun Tune” remixed by Umod (aka Domu – BBC Radio 1Xtra).
New signings Milez Benjiman, Kylie Auldist, Unforscene and Saravah Soul are currently on their debut outings for the label, which have variously grabbed the attention of the likes of Gilles Peterson, Domu, Mark Lamarr (BBC Radio 2) and been played on Radio1, BBC 6Music and XFM amongst others.

Unforscene provide the opening track, “Belly Full Of Lead”, a prime example of their masterful, cinematic productions; an atmospheric combination of modern and classical soundscapes and perfect beats. Having been players in the thriving Bristol music scene for a decade now, Unforscene have signed to Tru Thoughts to release their highly anticipated third album “Fingers and Thumbs”.
There is a refreshing diversity among the line-up of new acts showcased here, ranging from the punchy, Afro-Brazilian funk of Saravah Soul’s catchy debut single “Nao Posso Te Levar A Serio” through Kylie Auldist’s powerful and distinctive funk-laden soul on “Community Service Announcement”, produced and backed by Lance Ferguson and The Bamboos. Add to that the slick beats, wobbly basslines and twisted future sounds of Milez Benjiman’s “Crazy ‘Bout Ya” and it is a sure sign of exciting times and sonic surprises ahead.

Hot 8 Brass Band’s star is most certainly in the ascendancy and “Fly Away”, with its gospel-infused vocals and characteristically ramshackle jazzy sound, was one of the highlights of their “Rock With The Hot 8” album. This track was also recently featured on the Word Magazine cover-mount CD. After their sell-out UK tour in February and their appearance on The Culture Show on BBC2, Hot 8 Brass Band are in huge demand and will be back to play The Big Chill festival in August and a string of other dates around the UK.

Long-standing Tru Thoughts crowd-pleasers The Quantic Soul Orchestra, fresh from their triumphant UK and European tour, appear here with the first ever CD release of “She Said What? (Version)”. Speaking of Quantic, there’s also a sneak preview of the latest in Will Holland’s series of musical personae, with his Flowering Inferno dub version of Me&You’s “Brown Paper Bag”, the Roni Size cover that sent rooftops flying last year. Expect to be hearing more from Flowering Inferno this summer, as it’s the name under which Quantic is releasing a series of gorgeous deep dub/reggae influenced singles and an album in the next few months.
Kinny announces her return with “Back Street Lust” featuring Diesler, a heavy soul stormer taken from her forthcoming album. Nostalgia 77’s mesmeric recent single “Quiet Dawn” appears as a treat to all those who missed it, complete with the remix by former Tru Thoughts artist Bonobo, and Belleruche’s Northern Girls (Yam Who? Remix) is given its first outing on CD, having attracted high praise from Daddy G and DJ Andy Smith. Another exclusive treat on this CD is the killer Grant Phabao remix of Alice Russell’s “Humankind” which is destined to become a firm favourite this summer, with spine-tingling vocals and the trademark Grant Phabao magic.
To round up this stunning selection, Natural Self is back on Tru Thoughts, the home of his first releases, and he is on earth-shaking form as he proves with this self-penned, self-produced track, “Feet Keep Moving”, on which he also provides the vocals. Definitely one to watch in the very near future, this is an upfront taster of his forthcoming album, “The Art Of Vibration”.

‘Maps From The Wilderness’ was the debut album by Alex Cowan, aka TM Juke.

A cohesion of beautiful melodies and rugged beats, “Maps from the Wilderness” is an accomplished album that should earn TM Juke the same accolades as fellow Tru Thoughts album acts Quantic, Jon Kennedy and Bonobo (who now record for Grand Central and Ninja Tune respectively).

Having recorded various songs for Tru Thoughts under the guise of Al Stylus, TM Juke took it upon himself to adopt a name suitable for styles and sounds he wished to explore with this album. The styles are varied and they seem to span the full orchestral range; rolling timpani drums underpin hazy beats whilst delicate guitars flitter amongst intricate strings.

As a producer, TM Juke draws on funk, soul, hip-hop and jazz influences, but adds a greater depth and maturity with immaculate arrangements that belie his twenty four years and give “Maps of the Wilderness” a strikingly original yet strangely familiar feel. Owing as much to the sampler as the guitar, the TM Juke sound embraces atmospheric melodies and street savvy beats in equal measures: this is made apparent by the album’s guest vocalists. Jim Oxborough and Alice Russell who join together for “Knee Deep”, the first single to be taken from the album, a lush affair with a natural swing and memorable hooks.

Bringing back the hip-hop, Canadian MC’s Bread and Water lend their calculated style to “Get It Together“ whilst appearing on behalf of the UK, Rup gets lyrical and gives “Wilderness Kids“ an edge that sets it apart from any uniform hip-hop sound. “Maps from the Wilderness” has all the ingredients that make a great record, setting new agendas in instrumental music whilst retaining a universal appeal.

We hope you enjoy.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, then you will no doubt have been eagerly anticipating the new Roots Manuva LP Slime & Reason just as much as I have. Officially out on 1st September on Big Dada

Rodney Smith aka Roots Manuva returns with his fourth full album and the man's voice and musical vision sounds as fresh as ever on this marvellous, freewheeling summation of his career so far.

Smith's inspiration for the new record has come from looking back to his roots, the music that moved him even before he heard hip hop. "With this record I was trying to tune into that old Channel One, Studio One aesthetic. Lord knows what they were drinking, smoking or eating or what they were doing or what was on their mind but to me that was a special period in music. Today, with the technology that's available it's pretty easy to make generic music, music that sounds like everything else. But to tap into a unique aesthetic, to make a long player that is of its own world is a harder job. How do we make it have an individual sound?"

There's no shortage of individuality on "Slime & Reason". While it's a record that commentators are already comparing to "Run Come Save Me" for its range, depth and impact, everything here sounds as unique, as utterly one-off, as the mind of the man who created it.

Manuva's own productions range from the skanking carnival anthem "Again & Again," through the melancholy funk of "C.R.U.F.F.," the electro-Bach rhythms of "Kick Up Ya Foot," the lof-fi Gospel of "A Man's Talk," the roots stylings of "The Show Must Go On" and the analog-synth attack of "It's Me Oh Lord." But as a vocalist, Roots has also been reinvigorated working with young producers Toddla T and Metronomy. There are three Toddla tracks here (including "Buff Nuff," the first single taken from the album) and they represent some of the funniest, most loose-limbed music Rodney has produced in years. In addition, Metronomy's "Let The Spirit" is one of the standouts of the record - a gorgeous piece of "blue-eyed" electro-funk which will be soundtracking our lives for a long time to come.

It's best to let Roots Manuva sum up the fearless, iconoclastic approach to his music which means he continues to be one of the most vital, exciting and straight-up honest artists working in the UK today. "You got to sing like no one's listening. You gotta fart like there's no one there to smell it!"

Hint is back with "Driven From Distraction" - his
first full album on Tru Thoughts. This killer mix
of instrumental and vocal tracks sees Hint
exploring the eclectic styles of music that have
excited and inspired him over the years - from hip
hop to electronica, fiery soul to straight up
dancefloor bombs - whilst pushing boundaries for a
new, unique sound. Stunning guest vocals are
provided by long-time collaborator Laura Vane; the
prodigious teenaged MC Rizzle; and Tru Thoughts and
Zebra Traffic label-mates Kinny and Rup. Hint has
been rocking dancefloors and releasing music of a
stunning quality for the best part of the 21st
century (notably, Hint was invited to record a Peel
Session at Maida Vale in 2002) and this new long
player is set to bring his unique and accomplished
skills as a producer and composer into the
limelight once and for all. He released his debut
album, the cheeky and chilled "Portakabin Fever" on
Ninja Tune in 2003 and has since released a handful
of EPs on Tru Thoughts, which have attracted
excellent reviews and acclaim from the likes of
Laurent Garnier and DJ Andy Smith (Portishead) and
many other DJs and tastemakers worldwide. The
"Driven From Distraction" album provides a first
and long-anticipated CD release for some of the
biggest and most sought-after cuts off those 12s
such as "I, Silverfish" (with Rups masterful
stream-of-consciousness MC?ing), "The Tremmuh" and
"At The Dance" - along with a host of amazing new
tracks.

The opening song, "Keep Your Shirt On" featuring
Laura Vanes soulful vocals, sets the mood for the
album it is pretty stripped down and electronic,
but energetic at the same time. On the deeply
melodic "Afro Love Forest", conjuring up images of
an exotic leafy glade, Tru Thoughts label-mate
Kinny gives a stellar performance, exercising the
reaches of her stunning vocal range with soaring
melodies and a darker undercurrent. "At The Dance"
has become something of an anthem since it came out
on the EP of the same name late last year. The rush
that it captures, at the moment when the massive
bassline kicks in and the energy level goes through
the roof, has made it a powerful DJ weapon.
Bringing a lighter tone to the album, "Got A
Pulse", with its infectious guitar riff develops
and progresses into one of Hint?s most catchy
compositions.

All the vocal tracks are intentionally quite
"poppy", with short intros, tight arrangements and
attention-grabbing sounds, such as the other Laura
Vane-voiced gem, "One Woman Army", a fiery
soul/boogie style track with catchy vocals and
melody and Hints trademark quirky beats and riffs.
"Snake Patrol", an instrumental featuring Gavin
Stenhouse on guitar, continues the "boogie" theme,
and the 80s-style synth lines layered over the
guitar parts Illuminate Hints fondness for
exploring interesting and seemingly strange
combinations. A lush, full track that harks back to
some of Hints earlier material, "Mutes And Drops"
has a chilled, blissful organic sound. In a change
of direction, newie "Muddled Morning" features the
talents of Rizzle - in Hints words, an "insanely
ambitious" 16-year-old MC who picked up on Hint?s
music through the wondrous medium of MySpace and
proceeded to hassle him for a couple of beats. With
an aim to keep on representing his own experiences
and day-to-day life through his music (whilst he
says most of his contemporaries in the MC field are
starting to rhyme about stabbing people on the bus
and the like) Rizzle is a fun and refreshing
presence, laying a hip hop/grime rhyme onto one of
Hints chunkiest beats yet. "Scrawnys Beat",
another new track, is a dancefloor bomb that evokes
that feeling of being totally overwhelmed by the
sound and the pressure coming out of the speakers.
"The Tremmuh", probably Hints biggest hit to date,
wraps up this album in style and will leave you in
no doubt that Hint is on top of his game

Early into her trip, she was hanging out at a local hip-hop club when fate threw a golden moment her way. “This guy came up to me and asked me if I was Stacy Epps,” she recounts, still blown by the experience a full year later. “It just blew me away that he recognized me, that people really research me to even find out what I look like. Then they played my record in the club. It was just amazing to me how far my music had spread, and that people in the Muthaland were familiar with and appreciated my music.” The song the deejay played that night was “Eye”, a track from MF DOOM and Madlib’s collaboration album Madvillainy (Stone’s Throw, 2004) which Stacy guest appeared on, propelling her to buzz status on the independent hip-hop scene. And her chance encounter that night in Cape Town was, much like the song itself, one more in a long procession of signs that line the road to her destiny as a vocalist without boundaries, a singing, rapping, vibing conductor of emotion, soul and sweet spirit. Like all superheroes, it is a destiny that took her a while to fully embrace.
