The music of CYNE (pronounced “sign,” and standing for "cultivating your new experience”) is all about hard-hitting beats and introspective lyrics concerned with socio-political issues, and the group cites everyone from Nas and Public Enemy to J Dilla and DJ Premier as an influence (as seen on last year's Pretty Dark Things).

When asked to fashion a podcast for XLR8R, the four-man hip-hop collective compiled 18 tracks by like-minded artists and created a virtual timeline of hip-hop and rap music, from old favorites like N.W.A. and Camden Crew to up-and-comers like eLZhi, and, appropriately, since February celebrates the anniversary of his death, an opening track from the late J Dilla.

Substantial/Burns - The Memo (Move Me)

After an incredible run of singles off his sophomore album Sacrifice that landed him rotation on MTV, VH1, FUSE & BET, features in URB, Black Beat, and more, Substantial returns with a brand new side-project entirely produced by Pittsburgh-native beatsmith, Burns, entitled Substantial/Burns. Fans of the Sacrifice album will undoubtedly recall Burns’ exemplary work on “Let It Go”. Shortly after creating that track, the duo decided to craft more songs in that vain before the DMV’s most prolific son began work on his third official LP.

“The Memo (Move Me)” is a brutally honest commentary on the state of Hip-Hop music and the lack of substance found in the output from both mainstream and underground scenes. Here Substantial offers his view and encourages artists to take the inspiration that they were given and use it to inspire others regardless of your choice of medium. Burns laces Sub with an airy, mystic like soundscape, which is the perfect canvas for his baritone vocals.

Substantial/Burns, will be released as a digital-exclusive on October 20, 2009. It features appearances from Extended Famm, Kokayi, Steph the Sapphic Songstress & others. Stay tuned to for the official tracklisting, exclusives and more!

R.I.P. Grandmaster Roc Raida Tribute Mix

As we all know about Roc Raida's tragic passing last week, I could only do a tribute on my blog to honor him as a fan. Last night DJ Premier did his part. As a friend and as a pioneer. Of course I couldn't let the people in the dark by not premiering it, so here we have another exclusive on the internet. Premo did his thing and remember this is for free, do not try to bootleg it for cash. I still got the MJ Tribute in the back of my head. Have fun and salute Grandmaster Roc Raida with DJ Premier and Panchi in the next hour, hip hop is life

Apathy - Wanna Snuggle? (2009)

Connecticut’s world famous rhyme wrecker returns with a warm hug and a deadly snakebite on his sophomore full length album, Wanna Snuggle? Apathy, known as lead MC of the indie fan favorite Demigodz clique as well as a member of Jedi Mind Tricks’ Army of the Pharaohs crew, follows up 2006’s well-received Babygrande Records Eastern Philosophy debut with a brand new masterpiece of 21 songs.

Painstaking lyricism, strangleholding mic presence, high caliber rap flows and upper echelon neck-snapping production round out this release in true Demigodzilla fashion. Some of the highlights include the uptempo “Shoot First”, which is a Mike Shinoda produced track featuring the legendary B-Real (of Cypress Hill) and Celph Titled, as well as a collaboration with J-Live called “This Is The Formula”. Little Brother’s own Phonte makes a cameo on “True Love”, and some soulful hooks are laced across the album courtesy of Chip-Fu (of Fu-Schnickens) and Wu-Tang vocalist Blue Raspberry. Also contributing a major factor to the album is singer Holly Brook, best known for Fort Minor’s chart topping “Where’d You Go” single and video. Fort Minor, Get Busy Committee, Demigodz and AOTP family are definitely in full effect throughout the project, including Ryu (of Styles of Beyond), Motive, Emilio Lopez, King Magnetic, Veze Skante and more.

The bulk of production is handled by Apathy himself, who has been building up a production resume producing for Tiye Phoenix, Styles of Beyond, 7L & Esoteric, Eternia, and upcoming albums from Cypress Hill and Edo G. This is an impressive body of work and is much anticipated by faithful fans that Apathy has steadily accumulated from his long list of indie vinyl era 12” singles, album-like mixtapes, epic double disc It’s the Bootleg compilation and relentless domestic and international touring. Sure to be contender for Hip Hop album of the year, Wanna Snuggle? smashes completely through the sophomore jinx and delivers timeless rap music for you and yours.

Mick Boogie got together with some of his favorite producers and emcees and came up with a Mick Boogie classic. All the PBJ songs from their “Living Thing” album completely remixed and reworked. The reason why I posted it is Sniper's former video post of track No. 4, the Jazzy Jeff remix which I personally admire the most and became one of my favourite tracks.

Mikey D-Chosen One featuring Timid

1.Mikey D-Chosen One featuring Timid

Born in Queens, New York as Michael Anthony Deering.

At an early age, Mikey started out on the park jam circuit with the Clientele Brothers. MC's Will Seville, Eddie O' Jay along with Mean Gene were considered among the best at displaying real rhyme skills as a group similar to the Cold Crush Brothers and The Force MC's (later renamed The Force MD's). As a group, the Clientele Brothers were looking for the next hot MC - enter Playboy Mikey D. With Mikey, the group had the last ingredient and they definitely took the Queens park jam scene to the next level.

As Hip Hop phenomena grew in the mid 1980's, the time came for a record deal. In 1985, Mikey D along with the Symbolic Three singed to Reality Records. With Producers Ray (Professor KB) Romain, Dr. Rhythm and Dr. Shock, songs like 'No Show' (the answer to Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick's 'The Show'), along with 'Treacherous' took underground radio by surprise. In 1986, Mikey D (and DJ Johnnie Quest) signed with Public Records and put out classics Like 'Dawn,' 'My Telephone,' and 'Bust A Rhyme'. In 1987 he hit the industry with 'I Get Rough' (B side 'Go For it') with legendary producer Paul C.

In 1988, Mikey's career really got hot when he signed to Sleeping Bag Records. The record company was so enthused by the Queens battle legend's reputation; they entered him into the New Music Seminar. After battling several known and unknown rappers round by round he was victorious and proclaimed the best MC in the world (as he predicted in 1987's 'I Get Rough'). Later that year, he released 'Out Of Control' and the wicked 'Comin' In The House'.

In 1994 Mikey D was enlisted by the groundbreaking Main Source to replace their lead MC Large Professor. Mikey (along with K-Cut and Sir Scratch) hit the studio and recorded the sequel to 'Breaking Atoms' entitled "F*ck What You Think". Although another historic album was birthed, it was not released due to infighting between the record label and group management. After all of the chaos he had been through, the legendary rapper took a step back from the music he loved so much to focus on family and other pressing issues.
