Definitive Jux has the extreme pleasure of announcing the
reissue of Company Flow's seminal full length debut,
Funcrusher Plus. Out of print since 2006, this certified
classic album has been remastered and will be available
worldwide!
Already ahead of its time when originally released in 1997,
Funcrusher Plus is widely recognized as one of the most
influential hip hop albums ever, shattering conventions with
its musical complexity and uncompromising lyricism.
Comprised of producer/MC El-P, MC Bigg Jus, and DJ Mr. Len,
Company Flow's music rejected the conventional hooks and
jazz/funk samples favored at the time, opting instead for
jagged, lo-fi and punishing sonics crowned with
confrontational and highly literate word-play an drhyme
patterns. The group's musical approach and legendary D-I-Y
ethic went on to influence an entire genre for the past
decade. Originally appearing as a self-released vinyl-only
EP in 1995, their music caught the attention of underground
hip hop and alternative music scenes worldwide, eventually
landing them a deal with then unknown NYC hip hop label
Rawkus Reocrds. The release of the full length on Rawkus
signified a new era in hip hop, and soon after the likes of
Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monche and others followed
suit. Company Flow's attitude and urgent approach gave birth
to a movement that defined a new era within the hip hop
world.

Welcome to Bucktown, the soundtrack, was inspired by the 1975 Blaxploitation film Bucktown. The soundtrack takes the listener through modern day Bucktown, AKA Brooklyn, as coined by the rap duo Smif-N-Wessun circa 1994, and explores the evolution and current conditions through the eyes of hip-hop Brooklyn artists. General Steele proclaims “I didn’t try to copy the film or the soundtrack, but the concept and the feel of it. I was able to relate to what they where going through with the police and with their own comrades and I wanted to depict that vibe & energy with the songs and the artwork.

Arriving less than a year after his last album Generation X, Sadat X delivers his sixth solo release, making him by far the most prolific member of the legendary hip hop group, Brand Nubian. If any of his recent albums are any indication, Sadat X is not looking to stray too far from his socially conscious lyrics and hardcore Golden Age delivery. Brand New Bein’ features other like-minded hip hop enthusiasts such as KRS-One, Lord Jamar, Grand Puba, Craig G, C-Rayz Walz, Buckshot and Rahzel. Production on the album is completely handled by the Rocksteady Crew’s DJ JS-1 and JW.
