Luther “Luke” Campbell is known for pointing at women’s bottoms and smiling. He has entertained and excited millions throughout his musical career, both as an advocate of free speech and through the bare-faced notoriety of his group, The 2 Live Crew. But now he is set for change and as his campaign for Mayor of Miami heats up, we hear about the artists that have turned their back on him and his society – from millionaires like P Diddy to the unjustifiably rich Cash Money Records label owners, Luke stands on his own now and is determined to be victorious in his visions. Elzhi steps onto the show, moments away from a European tour to promote his latest dope release “Elmatic”. The future for Elzhi looks exciting – colabs with Madlib, Crooked I,MF Doom are all discussed here as well as the possibility of an Elzhi and Eminem collaboration.
Vast Aire pounces onto the show to discuss his new album “OX 2010 Street Odyssey”, including the multi-layered concepts behind each track, the many guest features and the creative process itself. He reveals the reason why Vordul Mega stepped away from music, citing one violent event involving a crazed fan as the main cause of Mega’s back step, as well as discussing his current relationship with EL-P, Cage and Def Jux’s closure. New Cannibal Ox music could happen but for now it is the album and his new book which both take the center stage for Vast Aire.

Atmosphere Live @ The House of Blues in San Diego
Last Friday Atmosphere’s tour stopped in San Diego so I drove down to hang out with some of my best friends so we could all enjoy one of our favorite hip hop duos of all time. This is the 10th time I’ve seen Atmosphere perform live and we were lucky because Slug was celebrating his 44th birthday that night and seemed extra amped to be playing in front of the San Diego crowed. The place was packed (as you can see from the photos and videos) and Slug did his thing as always, digging back into his vast library of classics which us die hard fans could not get enough of. I grew up listening to this music and even though Slug is old enough to be my dad, he is still one of the best in the game and it was almost a nostalgic event as you could see that Slug too had grown up a lot since the beginning. Slug may not be super gritty or have crazy punch lines but is music is the truth and full of soul. These days I value that over just about anything else.
If you have a chance to see this tour please do it. Request a media pass and go nuts because who knows how many more chances we will have to see these guys really do this with everything they have. Check out the videos below and stay up!

RJD2 – Live At The Rave (2011)
Mayer Hawthorne - Impressions (Covers EP)(2011)
1. Work To Do
This one features my live band, The County: Quentin Joseph on drums, Topher Mohr on guitar, Quincy McCrary on piano, and Joe Abrams on bass. It was recorded live in a radio station studio somewhere during our Winter 2010 US tour. The tapes recently surfaced, but nobody can remember exactly where we were. The song is originally by The Isley Brothers, and that’s the only version I was familiar with until we started playing it in our live shows and people would come up to us and say “hey, loved your cover of Average White Band!”.
2. Don’t Turn The Lights On
My favorite track from Chromeo’s latest LP. On the surface it’s an electro-funk, dance floor filler, but underneath is a brilliant love ballad with lyrics that reminded me of something from Tyrone Davis. Dave1 (of Chromeo) told me the song is about a guy who falls in love with a ghost, so I wanted my version to have an eerie, ghostly feel to it. Quincy McCrary played the creepy piano solo at the end.
3. You’ve Got The Makings Of A Lover
Textbook Northern Soul from a little known Dallas, Texas group called The Festivals. I was digging for records in NY with my homey DJ Kurse, and the shopkeeper played the 45 in the store. Both of us immediately ran up to the counter and said “yo! what is THAT?!”. The original version was recorded in the late 60s, and the mix isn’t very good. I wanted a version that I could bump. Quentin Joseph played the drums and we recorded them at Sam Beaubien’s studio in Detroit. That’s Sam playing the trumpet as well.
4. Fantasy Girl
This song was written and composed by an amazing man from Pasadena named Steve Salazar. He was born with a heart condition and passed away at the young age of 27. Before he died he recorded one incredible album of demos in the mid-70s with a band called Shorty’s Portion. Peanut Butter Wolf found a copy of the album and I loved it so much that he gave it to me (thanks Wolf!). The vinyl had a handwritten note tucked in the sleeve that was addressed to anyone who could help the band with management, a record deal, radio airplay, etc. I’d estimate there were less than 300 copies pressed. That’s my Dad playing pedal steel guitar and Topher Mohr shredding the guitar solo on my version.
5. Little Personhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
Jon Brion is not from this planet. He penned this song for the soundtrack to Charlie Kaufman’s film “Synecdoche, NY”. I didn’t get the film at all, but I really got the soundtrack. The original has only female vocal and piano, but I always heard a larger arrangement. Hubert Alexander played some of the piano and I did everything else.
6. Mr. Blue Sky
This one also features my band, The County, and was recorded live, in one take, in a tiny makeshift tent, at a festival in Dour, Belgium.

Vespertina is a pop tour-de-force that combines catchy hooks with the drama and fantasy of opera. Comprised of critically acclaimed producer Stoupe, of hip hop group Jedi Mind Tricks, and vocalist/pianist Lorrie Doriza, Vespertina is a classically inspired trip-pop plunge into a deranged storybook rabbit hole.
Nearly three years in the making, their groundbreaking debut LP album, "The Waiting Wolf," is a dark Odyssey that plays like a three act opera. The fusion between Doriza's original compositions and Stoupe's trademark drums and production, with additional arrangements by up-and-coming Philadelphia producer, Z. Gillespie, give a wonderfully dramatic platform from which to weave her tale. Using a blend of both electronic and live instruments, along with a chorus of harmonies, Vespertina's sound is as big and theatrical as their live shows. Doriza's voice is at once powerful and coy, vengeful and sweet, but always a perfect complement to the music and always in character.
Doriza and Stoupe first worked together on the song "Find A Way" from Stoupe's 2009 solo album "Decalogue." For the past few years they have been hard at work on the record, sharing ideas between Philadelphia and New York, recording musicians in both cities, and now it's finally here.
