Erykah Badu joined The Roots on Jimmy Fallon this past Friday to join The Legendary during their on-air tribute to the late Michael Jackson. While most of the treats happened between commercial breaks, Questlove was generous enough to pass along these covers of “I Wanna Be Where You Are” and “Billie Jean”, which they recorded live in the 30 Rock studio just before the taping began. Their very name, "Ancient Astronauts," implies a mash-up of the distant past and the far future; traits exemplified in their melding of old school hip hop, funk, and dub reggae with forward-thinking flair and production technique. The Ancient Astronauts are Kabanjak and Dogu hailing from Cologne, Germany . . .via outer space! Coy with their true origins, the duo can only confirm that they returned to planet Earth in 2001 after traveling the musical cosmos for thousands of years.
Those familiar with the phenomenon of "ancient astronauts," a belief that extraterrestrial beings visited Earth in ancient times to mingle and trade ideas with early human civilizations, won't be surprised that upon returning this particular spaced-out duo quickly set up a terrestrial sound studio, a record label (Switchstance Recordings), and a successful production, remixing and DJ career dropping sound bombs all over the world.

Hot off the heels of her debut single - Ragen Fykes, one half of M64 with producer Ohmega Watts , has blessed us with a free download mini-EP to mark the occasion. The single, “Rhythm Of The Drum” b/w “In The Pocket,” came out as both a limited edition 7″ and digital single this past Tuesday, courtesy of Record Breakin Music. This release is especially significant to me, as not only are Ragen & Ohmega two of my favorite artists, but this marks the first time a song that was first exclusive to the site (”Rhythm Of The Drum” was posted back in September), being picked up and officially released by a label. A few other FRESHclusives have recently been picked up by different labels as well - so look out for more news on that later. But big ups to DJ Junior of Record Breakin for believing in the cause and please go out and support the single.
But as for today, what we have is a little gift from Ragen, With Love. The three track mini-EP features rough mixes of two unreleased solo tracks - “In Love,” produced by Othello & “Love Life,” produced by devonwho - as well as another M64 track I leaked last year, “Helium,” in case you missed it then.

Born and bred in Washington Heights, notoriously a hotbed for hip hop, taeOne first dabbled in the scene as a graff writer, roaming the streets and subway tunnels of New York's underground. After getting popped by the cops for vandalism, he got his hands on an Akai s20 and decided to use his creative energy more productively as a beatsmith.
taeOne curates a sound that captures and expands on the spirit of 90s hip hop. Naming the Beatminerz, Organized Noise, and Jay Dee as influences, no sound or tempo is off limits. TaeOne's versatility means his beats are at home in the seediest strip clubs and the finest upscale lounges.
His new album, Midnight, is dedicated to all those who thrive on the energy of the dark and eerie early hours. The calmness/ dread that nighttime brings has always been a real inspiration for taeOne musically. A lot of what made 90's golden era hip hop (Mobb Deep, Nas, Black Moon, Wu Tang) so classic was the dark sinister tone of Giuliani era New York City, especially at night. With this album taeOne expands on that tone and breaths new life into a generation of Hip Hop that is close to lost.
