Formed in Melbourne 2004, Illzilla are back with a brand new sound and the follow up to their self titled EP. Coming together from a range of musical backgrounds, the band has a foot firmly planted in hip hop while producing a sound that also blends reggae, old school funk, blues and rock.
Fronted by MC Mantra, one of Australia’s most respected and talked about young lyricists, he delivers razor sharp narratives with precision, wit and an energy that’s undeniable. Mantra has worked tirelessly in the Aussie hip hop scene, as a member of Equills (album ‘The New Threat’ out on Shogun 2006) and C.M.W., plus he has appeared on releases by Chasm, Diafrix, Hykoo, Jase & more. Mantra has also played guest host on Ch 31’s hip hop show Heavyweight TV, hosted the Melbourne final of JumpOff.TVs MC Battle, and hosted the PushOver MC & Beatbox Battle.
Illzilla’s rhythm section includes acclaimed reggae producer Mista Savona (who released the 2007 album ‘Melbourne Meets Kingston’ on Elefant Traks) on keyboards; Julian Goyma on drums; Tom Martin on guitar, and Bob Knob on bass. These four accomplished musicians set a unique, powerful and driving backdrop for the raps of Mantra.
Following on from their 2005 EP (distributed by Obese Records), Wasteland is the band’s first full-length album. Featuring guest appearances from talented singer Paul Havea (R.I.P.), along with MC 1-6, Jeremedy (Inflatables) and MC Elf Tranzporter (Combat Wombat), it also includes cuts by DJ Jumps (Cat Empire) and DJ Wasabi (C.M.W).
