Brooklyn Park Renamed After Beastie Boy Adam Yauch

In honor of the late Beastie Boys member Adam "MCA" Yauch, the Brooklyn Heights playground in New York City has been renamed Adam Yauch Park. The ceremony took place on 4 May - the first anniversary of Beastie Boy Adam Yauch's death - and saw fellow Beastie Boy Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz and Yauch's mother, Frances Yauch, both give sentimental and heart-felt speeches. Adam Yauch died at the age of 47 due to cancer, leaving behind a wife, a daughter, and of course a legacy of outstanding music.

De La Soul to return with one video hit a month

Next week De La Soul will independently issue their first song and video in nine years, "Get Away (feat. the spirit of Wu-Tang)," in the first of the hip-hop group's planned series of monthly single releases, through YouTube and social media. De La Soul will join LL Cool J, Public Enemy and Ice Cube next month for this summer's national Kings of the Mic tour.

"I think it's a great record to reintroduce ourselves with," Maseo, the group's DJ, told Rolling Stone in an interview from Los Angeles before a show Wednesday. "It's pretty much reflecting on the state of hip-hop at this moment. Everything is redundant. Everything sounds the same. No real lyrical content. Everybody's just doing business, not really creating."

"Get Away," De La Soul's first single in the era of Facebook, Twitter and iTunes, marks 25 years since the trio formed in Long Island. In March they shot a video for the song, which samples a skit from the Wu-Tang Clan's 1997 Wu-Tang Forever. Other than the occasional collaboration – their song with Gorillaz, "Feel Good Inc.," won a Grammy – De La Soul have favored touring over recording since 2004's The Grind Date.

"I think putting out those singles would be more impressionable than dropping an album at this present day in music," Maseo explained, adding that the group will eventually release a long-in-the-works album, You're Welcome. "It's about trying to just creatively have a bunch of songs in the stable. You have to consider a lot from the administrative standpoint in the release of a project. I see the song that we're putting out being the perfect B-side – with a video this time."

Though Maseo says he expects singles will take precedent over albums, the group has discussed experimenting with making soundtrack-style records in the vein of Isaac Hayes' Shaft and Marvin Gaye's Trouble Man.

"It's long overdue. Trust me, man, it disgusts me how long it takes for us to make a record," Maseo said with a laugh. "Out of all the time we take, we are always happy with the finished product."

RZA Says:Two Ol' Dirty Bastard Biopics Underway

Wu-Tang Clan leader the RZA is working on two separate biopics about his cousin and bandmate, the late Ol' Dirty Bastard, IndieWire.com reports. One, Dirty White Boy, will focus on Dirty's manager during the rapper's final two years. The other, with the working title Dirt: One Word Could Change The World, will involve ODB's family. "His mother is involved with Dirty White Boy. I'm involved with both, anything about his life, I want to help out with any capacity. His mother told me I should come in and help," said RZA.

Dirty White Boy examines the twilight of Dirty's career, but Dirt looks to tell the early days of the rapper's journey. "As far as Dirt, that actually starts back when we was young . . . Me and [ODB] ran through this city, man, cutting school, stealin' pretzels from the hot dog stand, being vagabonds, sleeping on the trains, drinking '40s on the back of the A Train, rapping, getting chased by the police," said RZA. "It's a coming-of-age story that me and him and a few of our cousins went through. Then it goes on into finally becoming Wu-Tang, going through that hell. And then it takes on his side of it, not my side."

RZA might have even larger roles, hinting that he may score Dirty White Boy and that he appears in the script on multiple instances. But RZA downplayed a possible directorial role with either film, saying, "I dunno, it depends. Right now I'm not, though."

RZA will make his directorial debut with the martial arts film The Man With The Iron Fist, opening November 2nd.

MF Doom Once Again Sends An Impostor To A Show..

MF DOOM’s sporadic appearances at shows have raised many eyebrows over the years. This past weekend, DOOM’s impostor strolled through again in London for Livin’ Proof’s event called Livin’ DOOM. A party that was meant to celebrate DOOM’s musical legacy and his wide-ranging catalog, the British DJ collective took careful measures to organize the event. According to the statement released by the crew via its Facebook page, “The real DOOM was going to appear.” Unfortunately, as the picture above shows, an impostor was sent to act as the real MF DOOM who made a quick stand that didn’t even include a DJ set, which was initially promised.

As expected, Livin’ Proof was utterly disappointed by this misjudgment from DOOM’s team, and released a detailed statement explaining the situation. Read below:

To everyone who came down to our Livin’ DOOM event on Saturday and are questioning whether that was the real DOOM – we are in the same position as you. We had a legitimate contracted gig from his official booking agent and were in contact throughout the booking process with his US management, and label. We were even talking and working with the promoters of DOOM’s forthcoming London live shows in October and November.

As far as we were concerned, the real DOOM was going to appear… we received news from DOOM’s management on the morning of the gig that DOOM wanted more money or he would not show up. This show was done and intended as a very special and intimate show which was not about making money but putting on an incredible party in a very small capacity venue. As we wanted the show to go ahead and was left to ransom to this extortionate request, we agreed this even though this was a breach of our agreed contract. In hindsight, we should have cancelled the show then and there…

At 9.30pm after we had open the doors, we were told by management that he would appear but would not DJ and was just going to sign autographs. We said this was unacceptable as we had agreed and paid for a DJ set… 10 minutes later we received a call saying that he would DJ… Or that’s what we were led to believe.

As many of the people in the venue noticed, there is a very strong possibility the person that was finally sent down was not DOOM himself.

Doing this show has taught us a lot about how some artists operate and how they feel they can treat others and, most importantly, their fans. As fans of DOOM ourselves, this has left a very sour taste in our mouth.

Anyone who has been to Livin’ Proof parties always know that we do our utmost to provide the best quality show and we are so sorry for anyone who came down and were disappointed by the DJ set from the artist supposedly meant to be DOOM.

We will do our utmost to make this up to anyone who purchased a ticket for this event. We paid the fee upfront to Daniel Dumile’s bank account and have the receipts to prove this. We will be seeking legal advice and are doing our best to get his show fee refunded from DOOM and his management and will then take suitable steps after this action.

All the best,
 Livin’ Proof Crew.

R.I.P. MCA (Adam Yauch) Of The Beastie Boys

Beastie Boys MC Adam Yauch, aka MCA, has passed away due to cancer, TMZ reports. He was 47 years old.

The Beastie Boys are one of the most important and influential hip-hop groups of all time. They were instrumental in making hip-hop a global, mainstream force. Formed in 1981 as a hardcore band, they combined punk and rap into a singular sound that grew increasingly broad over the years, encompassing a vast array of genres. Yauch, Michael Diamond (Mike D), and Adam Horowitz (Ad-Rock) released several classic albums, including their debut album Licensed to Ill in 1986, 1989's Paul's Boutique, and 1994's Ill Communication.

Yauch directed Beastie Boys videos under the pseudonym Nathaniel Hornblower, as well as the 2008 basketball documentary Gunnin' for #1 Spot under his own name. He also ran a film production and distribution company, Oscilloscope Pictures, that shepherded many films, including Wendy and Lucy, We Need to Talk About Kevin, and the forthcoming LCD Soundsystem documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits. In the mid-1990s, he co-founded the Milarepa Fund, which raised money for the Tibetan independence movement. They put on a series of benefit concerts, the Tibetan Freedom Concerts.

Yauch was diagnosed with cancer in 2009, resulting in a canceled tour and the delay of their album Hot Sauce Committee. The Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month.
