The 50 Best J Dilla Songs According To Complex Mag

J Dilla. Jay Dee. James Yancey. One man, many aliases. But no matter how you chose to address him, there was no debating his genius. From his solo material, to his work with Slum Village and later the backbone of the Soulquarians collective; J Dilla’s contributions to music are priceless. His unique sound is still felt and oft-imitated six years after his death.

Emerging on the national scene in the mid-90s, Jay Dee’s warm, fuzzy, and soulful production style instantly made him a top prospect in the industry. The underground took notice, and he was quickly tapped to produce for the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Janet Jackson and The Pharcyde. He joined The Ummah production team with Q-Tip & Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and soon enough the kid from Detroit was starting to be recognized as a major player in hip-hop.

At the same time, Dilla was ushering in his own group, the Detroit-bred Slum Village, whom many called the successors to A Tribe Called Quest. Dilla never seemed happy with that comparison, however, and always insisted SV was harder-edged and more materialistic than the Native Tongues.

Dilla’s programming method was almost a drunken style: heavy on rhythm and percussion and, more often than not, slightly off-beat. It was beautiful yet bizarre, the way he could seamlessly twist and manipulate sounds in his favor, making them his own. The man was a wizard behind the boards.

It wasn’t until his death in 2006 at age 32 that the world really took notice and gave the man his proper respect. He was the ultimate producer/artist. Truth be told, a ‘Best of J Dilla’ list could easily stretch into the hundreds, but in honor of Dilla's birthday, Complex assembled our 50 favorite DIlla joints for your enjoyment. So adjust your headphones and get ready to learn yourself something about one of the most important figures in hip-hop history.

The Left's Gas Mask Cover (Original Photo)

I Always Wondered Where Did The Left Found The Pic For The Gas Mask Cover..

Izu Islands. They’re a group of volcanic islands in Japan. People live there, but because the air has been poisoned due to the volcanic activity, everyone who lives on an Izu Island has to carry a gas mask. At certain points, everyone has to wear a gas mask, at all times. Even during weddings.

Why Heavy D was one of the all time greats - A final farewell by R.A. The Rugged Man

"I didn’t have the honor of knowing HEAVY D personally and can’t say he was a friend of mine – but what I did have the honor of being to Heavy – was one of his biggest fans. I know a lot of people go out of their way to speak on how great an artist was after they die but I don’t do that shit – Heavy D and the Boyz was honestly one of my all time favorite groups and anyone who listens to my lyrics knows that I reference their music often – and I was honored to see it was recognized in this Daily News article about Heavy D.

He was an entertainer, a song writer, a hit maker – with an incredible flow and a strong quality in his vocals that’s lacking from this new school age of thin-voiced midget sounding bitch rappers. He had a true rappers voice and not a computer programmed, EQ’d to death, poorly annunicaited delivery. He wasn’t one of these unmusical, no-soul having rappers who learned how to rhyme a few Multi’s and wrote some half ass metephors and now thinks he’s a MC. Heavy D was the epitome of a dude you hand the mic to who could unquestionably rock any party. He was HipHop.

I especially loved HipHop that wasn’t all about being “gangsta” and “Keepin it Real in the streets” but was more about entertaining the crowd, grabbing the mic, and putting on an incredible show. Artists like Slick Rick & Doug E. Fresh, Whodini, Biz Markie – they knew how to have fun and rock the house without having to thug it out. And they were as “REAL” as HipHop gets. Heavy D was part of that era.
I remember being on tour and having an argument with a fellow rapper who thought he was too “hardcore” for Heavy D, he said Heavy D was corny and didn’t make “Real” HipHop. he was one of these cats who thought if it wasn’t BootCamp Click, Gang Starr or Wu-Tang Clan then it wasn’t “Real”. I love all that 90′s hiphop. I lived through that era and was part of it – but HipHop is more than just that one era or sound.

I aggressively, almost violently explained to this “Keep it Real” rapper on the tour that everyone of his favorite artists and producers fucked with Heavy D and respected his work. I couldn’t understand, him being such a die hard Gang Starr fan, why he didnt know the history Heavy had with Premo – and that they worked together on many occasions. Guru had even appeared on Heavy D’s album Blue Funk. OR, if he had loved that 90′s sound so much, how he didn’t know that Heavy D was the one who put Pete Rock on the map. Isn’t Pete Rock one of the most influential producers from the 90s?

It wasn’t just Premo and Pete Rock that The Heavster worked with, he made classic after classic with some of the greatest producers in history – Marley Marl, Teddy Riley and Erik Sermon to name a few and his right hand man Eddie F was an incredible producer too." R.A. The Rugged Man

Mobb Deep To Release The Black Cocaine EP On Black Friday

Mobb Deep isn’t wasting any time now that they have their own record label. Earlier this month, Prodigy and Havoc announced they finalized a deal through Sony's Red Distribution for their own label, Infamous Records, and now Havoc revealed to XXLMag.com, that the group has a concrete release date for their first official project in over five-years.
“We have an EP coming on Black Friday,” Havoc said, referring to November 25, the beginning of the holiday shopping season. “We didn’t come up with a title yet, but we’ll have a title that will mean something. It will be like seven or eight songs. I did like three. We have some produced by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Alchemist and this kid named Young Free.”

“It feels good man,” Hav added about he and P’s new deal. “It’s a long time coming. Now we could really be in control of our own destiny. It’s all on us now. For right now we’re gonna focus on the Mobb. But the label situation is set up to break other acts. We’re gonna be versatile with it. We’re not gonna just get the homie from up the block. We’re gonna get talent. We’re definitely serious about it.”
The Mobb’s last studio album was Blood Money, which came out in 2006 on G-Unit/ Interscope. The following year, P was sentenced to three-and-a-half-years for gun possession which put the group on hiatus until Prodigy’s release from jail last March. But the duo didn’t waste any time, and went right back to work, recording dozens of songs over the last few months. Yet Hav says that before doing business with Red, he and his partner talked about going back to G-Unit.

“That was definitely something we all were considering,” he detailed. “We sat down with 50. At the end of the day, us and 50 are still cool. We’re good. But what everybody concluded was that [we] need to go do [our] own thing with no restraints. That was the best decision everybody could have made. The EP is done. It sounds good, seven or eight songs. Some real hip-hop shit, some real substance.”
The yet-to-be-titled project is The Mobb’s first ever EP. So far they haven’t recorded with any guests, however Hav says they have one secret cameo from a huge artist that is currently in the works.

PremRock & Willie Green Tour

"After completing the album the goal of both of us is to take it as far as humanly possible and to spread the music while we are given the opportunity. We have already funded some of the trip ourselves but still need a lot of help to complete the mission. Transportation while overseas offers the biggest challenge, it can often be the most expensive part of any travel, not to mention food and on occassion finding a place to sleep.

Although we have the fortune of our album being released through Isolated Wax Records, our budget while overseas is entirely up to us, and in order to raise money we are willing to part ways with a WHOLE LOT of music. Even including our new record and personalized items as part of the deal.

In order to reach our goal we hope to accumulate the funds to make the traveling from country to country as seamless as possible and using any profits from the shows to recycle it back in CD and merchandise production.

We've made it pretty far with the help of our supporters but there really is no telling where we could end up with the proper push behind it.

We salute and thank all of you for your time and honestly can't wait to share this record and live show with you!

Peace,

Prem & Green"

Vinnie Paz Speaks On New JMT Album

Our new album “Violence Begets Violence” drops October 25th. Some of you have heard by now that this is the first Jedi Mind Tricks album we’ve made without Stoupe handling the production. Bottom line is at some point after making our last album, “A History of Violence,” Stoupe lost his passion for making hip-hop and wanted to try new things.

Through our career, we’ve always waited on him to get inspired to make a new album, but this time around we got tired of waiting out his creative drought. He tried to produce some things for this new album, but we could tell early on that his heart wasn’t in making JMT records anymore. He’s moved on as a producer to work in other genres with his sideprojects, Dutch and Vespertina, and we’ve moved on with a new crop of talented producers to make the hardcore hip-hop we’ve always been known for.

We’re reinvigorated and we feel like these younger, hungrier kids put a battery in our back. You deserve the best music we can make. Stoupe made great albums with us, but he’s moved in a different direction as a producer, so we decided this was the best move for us to make sure we give you guys the best music we can.

Regardless, Jus and I feel like we made a great record. I’ve made plenty of other albums with other producers. You guys know AOTP. You know my solo shit. Some of you even said that my solo album was the best work I’ve done to date, including all of the JMT albums. Don’t worry, that classic hardcore JMT shit is coming on October 25th. Just trust me. I’ve never let you down in 15 years. Give us the benefit of the doubt and listen to “Violence Begets Violence” with an open mind.

The music business is crazy right now. Most artists disappear after one album or one single. We’ve been fortunate to have a 15-year run, which could’ve never happened without you guys…our fans. The last thing we want to do is to try to pull the wool over your eyes, so we wanted to let you know upfront about Stoupe, but also let you know that we’re still Jedi Mind Tricks…we still are, and always will be, making hardcore shit no matter who mans the boards.

Here’s a taste of what’s in store. This one is called “Target Practice” and produced by Hypnotist Beats. Download it here.

As always thanks for your unwavering support,
Vinnie Paz and the JMT crew
