Kinny's debut solo outing is an original, colourful and up-to-the-minute brand of modern soul, featuring the production talents of an impressive roster of guests - including Quantic, Nostalgia 77 and Hint.
Working with seven different producers on 'Idle Forest Of Chit Chat' has enabled Kinny to push the boundaries of her own exceptional talent and expose herself to various styles and ways of working - from the tropical, live funk of The Quantic Soul Orchestra and Nostalgia 77's deep modern jazz; through the catchy, soulful electronica of TM Juke and Souldrop; to Unforscene's evocative soundscapes and a dose of lush, jazzy soul with a pop sensibility from Hint and Diesler. The result is an exciting melee of influences, all bound together by the unswerving class and charisma of Kinny's persona.
A Canadian national with a mix of Jamaican, Native Canadian Indian, French and Swedish heritage, Kinny - aka Caitlin Simpson - has always been immersed in an eclectic pool of cultural and musical influences. With a voice that sashays effortlessly between vertiginous, soaring melodies, steely staccato verses and caramel-dipped dulcet tones, it will come as no surprise that Kinny was a classically trained opera singer before the spontaneity and freedom of jazz, reggae and soul music lured her into pursuing her true passion. Describing herself as a 'freestyle improv vocalist', Kinny fuses a classical mezzo-soprano sound with the jazzy attitude-soul of the likes of Erykah Badu. Her hunger to cut the ties of convention and embrace new ideas led her to move to Bergen, Norway in 2001, after visiting on tour with her first band, Third Eye Tribe (who became well known in Canada and beyond for their electrifying live shows in which Kinny laid improvised vocals over electronic and dub beats). Bergen is a thriving musical melting pot of a city whose scene she describes as 'a huge wave of music, covering everything from death metal to dub'. Likening the environment to her native Vancouver, Kinny finds inspiration and intrigue in the extreme seasons, the peace and closeness to nature that abounds in sparsely populated countries, and the vibrant and diverse music scene - which also counts the likes of Röyksopp and Kings Of Convenience - and many of Norway's famously ardent purveyors of death metal - among its number.
Kinny's dinstinctive sound will be familiar to many as the voice of Kinny and Horne, whose previous album, 'Forgetting To Remember' brought her talent to the attention of the world's most respected musical minds and tastemakers - including Daddy G, who invited her to audition as a vocalist for Massive Attack; and Andy Smith, with whom she is working on a set of tracks for a potential collaboration in the near future.

Amongst the forthcoming onslaught of end-of-year lists (and after the blizzard of throaty rock magazine lists that have already appeared on Stereogum), I’m hoping for a few new categories, some new thoughts, new foundation principles. I might even start a few on my own, such as ‘Best Label That I Didn’t Think I Knew Very Well Until I Realised I Owned Most Of Their Back Catalogue’. This award, this week, goes to Werk Discs.
Way back in the midst of whenever, I spent a lot of time writing about Sweden’s Stacs Of Stamina, and even more time beating listeners over the head with them on the Fat Planet radio show. Their 2005 Werk album ‘Tivoli’ (feat. Earz and TTC) is still a masterstroke, and the pinnacle, of the came-and-went made-up genre of Eurocrunk. Werk also threw out the delicious ‘Grim Dubs’ series, featuring Atki2 and his alias Monkey Steak, the glorious digi-dub album ‘Foundation Bit’ from Disrupt, Lukid’s ‘Now EP’ featuring a clattering, wonky refix from Hudson Mohawke and the ravetastic retrovisionary recent drop from Zomby, ‘Where Were U In 92?’. Stellar, each and all, I’m breathless just typing the list. And after all that, there’s the not-insignificant matter of the new release from label boss Darren Cunningham, aka Actress, titled ‘Hazyville’.
But it’s to London kid Lukid we (re)turn, celebrating the release of his second album ‘Foma’ - promoted with a smart mix for FACT magazine and the admission that he’s been “listening to these [album] tracks for so long now that I don’t know if they are good or not anymore”. If this mix is anything to go by, they’re a smart bet for the next Award I decide to make up.

Formed in Melbourne 2004, Illzilla are back with a brand new sound and the follow up to their self titled EP. Coming together from a range of musical backgrounds, the band has a foot firmly planted in hip hop while producing a sound that also blends reggae, old school funk, blues and rock.
Fronted by MC Mantra, one of Australia’s most respected and talked about young lyricists, he delivers razor sharp narratives with precision, wit and an energy that’s undeniable. Mantra has worked tirelessly in the Aussie hip hop scene, as a member of Equills (album ‘The New Threat’ out on Shogun 2006) and C.M.W., plus he has appeared on releases by Chasm, Diafrix, Hykoo, Jase & more. Mantra has also played guest host on Ch 31’s hip hop show Heavyweight TV, hosted the Melbourne final of JumpOff.TVs MC Battle, and hosted the PushOver MC & Beatbox Battle.
Illzilla’s rhythm section includes acclaimed reggae producer Mista Savona (who released the 2007 album ‘Melbourne Meets Kingston’ on Elefant Traks) on keyboards; Julian Goyma on drums; Tom Martin on guitar, and Bob Knob on bass. These four accomplished musicians set a unique, powerful and driving backdrop for the raps of Mantra.
Following on from their 2005 EP (distributed by Obese Records), Wasteland is the band’s first full-length album. Featuring guest appearances from talented singer Paul Havea (R.I.P.), along with MC 1-6, Jeremedy (Inflatables) and MC Elf Tranzporter (Combat Wombat), it also includes cuts by DJ Jumps (Cat Empire) and DJ Wasabi (C.M.W).
