Most mixtapes that I listen to, usually look forward, bringing listeners’ attention to new tracks to discover. Being a pretty nostalgic person myself, constructing most of my music out of old records, recorded 30 to 50 years ago, I decided to reverse this formula and make a mix of tracks that are older than what you’d find on the usual online mixtape.

So, the result is a kind of snapshot of music I have listened to a lot in the last 10 years. All of these tracks, one way or another, inspired me to make the records I have released so far, and even though I’m now mostly checking very recent releases, or much older records to sample, I still sometimes come back to these tracks. I also included two of my own tracks that were made in that very inspirational period. I thought it’d be nice to share. Enjoy! Sincerely yours, Arts the Beatdoctor.

Has-Lo & Zilla Rocca - Cock Diesel

Link

Has-Lo and comrade Zilla Rocca put together called "Cock Diesel". The track is lyrical exercise with no shortage of wit: "I read it. Listen to my old testament, make numbers off proverbs and cop better cribs." Zilla Rocca (World Around Records) handles the production, replete with swirling strings, bells (though not of the cow variety), and powerful drums. Add in a sound clip of the late Big Pun to the mix and you have a track that sounds like Humphrey Bogart wandering into the wrong hood...a problem.

"A skeleton loop is the very first version of any beat I make. Like a quick sketch on a napkin. Despite the timeline given, the majority of these were made between 2003 and 2005. I'm releasing the loops as-is, because otherwise they'd just get thrown out. Apologies for the low quality. Some are off tapes, some are off CDs, some are off an older hard-drive." -Romero Shaw
