It would be fair to call Quetzal a typical vinyl
junkie; born and raised on the sounds of classic
soul and jazz, by the early 90's he had discovered
a love of hip hop culture, through the New York
scene. It was this music and a fascination with
processes used to create it, which gave Quetzal the
drive to become a producer. Sample based music and
crate digging were the flavour, and by 2003
producing had become the focus of his career
'Vision' follows on from the hugely popular Onra &
Quetzal joint drop ' Present Tribute'. Onra's
follow up to this was the massive 'Chinoiseries'
album, merging instrumental hip hop and obscure
Vietnamese pop samples (leading to one track being
lifted and reinterpreted for the Coka-Cola Beijing
Olympics ad campaign!) Now it is Quetzal's turn to
blow up, with his own long player 'Vision'
'Vision' explores a world of smooth grooves
combined with more rootsy musical elements; 70's
Latin, Caribbean and Jamaican styles are clearly
present, all seamlessly melded with more hip-hop
and soul flavours. This is a nomadic sound
Quetzal is clearly a well travelled individual, and
listening to 'Vision' feels like a journey through
several diverse places. This is one for the beat
journeymen and fans of Dusted Soul grooves and Tru
Thoughts alike. 'Vision' also features guest vocals
from Marie M, The Outabodies and Dye. While working
on "Vison", his forthcoming new album just started
in 2007,Quetzal produced three tracks featured in
the Boulangerie compilation, by the Fine Equipe. He
is currently also working with many other diverse
artists such as Dye, Leck Lips, Marie M, Nicolas
Coyez, The Outabodies, Doods Mc, Enz, Mil, Fave
Check!.

State of the Art is the 5th studio album to be released by Australian hip hop trio, Hilltop Hoods. It is the first release by their newly founded record label, Golden Era Records. State of the Art was released on 12 June, 2009. Hiphop pressure beats this week from Hyperdub's first US signing and Flying Lotus collaborator Samiyam. With only a small handful of releases to his name for everyone from Fat City recs to Ninja Tune the styles sit very closely to his production brother Flylo with a superbly squashed selection of downtempo hiphop all carrying that distinctive synthline sound and post-bump rhythms drawing from the legacy of Dilla mixed with the recent 8-bit sounds displayed on Hyperdub from Quarta 330, Darkstar, Rustie and the rest. Samiyam obviously shares Flylo's knack for unravelled slo-beats on 'Cheesecake backslap', but it's the first three cuts, and especially 'trick platform' that place Samiyam out on his own with a deftly melancholy melodic touch that will beg many repeated listens. Yet again, another reason to keep a very close eye on the ever evolving Hyperdub imprint, and a wonky killer.

"Melbourne born and raised and being involved in hip hop since his own mum got a dubbed copy of "2 Live Crew" from some guy at her work for him back in 1993, the seed was planted at an early age. After close to ten years writing hip hop and earlier this year releasing the nine track 'City Landscapes' sampler (available for full download at www.micmaster.com) the time has come to put forth his thoughts and words into the ring. All that was needed was a blank canvas.

After hearing rumours of a beatmaker going by the name of Xcise at his current place of work it was decided further investigation was needed. This involved jacking one of his beats and recording a track over it (City Landscapes) to prove to the producer that they should be working together. It worked, and now Xcise & Dutch have blessed him with an array of production that draws on emotions, funk and plain ol hip hop sampling to create a unique soundscape that has formed the foundations for what will surely be a classic release.
