Dub Pistols feat. Rodney P – Ganja (2010)

This is the Dub Pistols’ third single of their fourth album “Rum & Coke” (2009). They are a London based dub band with the whole package. This time around, the Dub Pistols are ganging up with UK hip-hop legend Rodney P to break down this beat. ‘Ganja’ is a funky groove that just makes you feel like you’re in Jamaica.
‘Ganja’ is a perfect example of the new hip-hop sound of complex beats and bass with the old school reggae sound of fat horns and steel drums. After a while however, the drum and bass does get a little old because it is the same throughout the whole song. But every once and a while, it surprises you with a little sound effect or bongo roll.
The steel drums are a great piece to this group. It is unclear if they were computerized or actually recorded, but regardless, they add a texture almost no reggae song has today. The drums give you a feel like you are closer to the Island.
The horns should be played up more. They only appear a few times throughout the piece. When they do come in, they bring force and a big sound that makes Dub Pistols unique among the newer artists to the reggae genre. D.P. definitely has instruments that other bands cannot call their own. This makes them easy to listen to because it is not the same old same old.

I think there are much better joints on this Dub Pistols record which could have been dropped as 12 inchers. Thanks a lot for the post though!
