MF DOOM: The Essence Of Underground, Unapologetic Hip Hop Art

Since the advent of Hip-Hop culture and rap music, there have been thousands of emcees that could've and would've been all-time greats if it were not for some unfortunate twists.  Indeed, such is life.  However, unlike your everyday strap-hanger, these lost emcees and fem-cees may have had a toe in the door, their dreams perched atop a column bathed in golden light just out of arm's reach.  If not for life rudely snatching their respective career collars, we may have witnessed a great one instead of their old dat tapes being left to languish in the storage of a now defunct imprint.

The late '80s, early '90s are considered the Golden Age of Hip-Hop for many reasons. Primarily, this timeframe is celebrated for originality, unique cadence, wordplay, storytelling, scratching, unfettered sampling, subject diversity and experimentation, among other things.

The group KMD was founded in 1988 when brothers DJ Subroc and Zev Love X joined with an emcee named Rodan, who was later replaced by Onyx the Birthstone Kid.  They got major buzz when appearing on the hit 3rd Bass song "The Gas Face".

After the release of Mr. Hood, which garnered decent rotation on Yo! MTV Raps for singles "Peachfuzz" and "Who Me?" in 1991 it seemed like things were heading upward for KMD. But life is full of curve balls..

DOOM is one of the most original and uncompromising voices in hip-hop. From his work in the 90’s with the seminal KMD to his legendary releases under a variety of aliases including MF Doom, Madvillain, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, Dangerdoom & more, his prolific body of work has always valued artistic integrity and creativity over anything else. As numerous and varied as his albums are, DOOM also has a thick catalog of guest appearances, remixes, non-album tracks, & vinyl only singles. For the first time, Unexpected Guests presents many of these hard to find tracks as a mix CD, executed and overseen by the Super Villain himself.

With a list of co-conspirators which includes marquee level names such as Talib Kweli, Ghostface & GZA as well as underground heroes Vast Aire, CountBass D & Kurius, the music on this disc highlights DOOM’s ever-present trademark wit and taste for raw and ominous beats. On “Trap Door,” he spits couplets like “No curse words / DOOM the worst church nerd verse heard” over a plucked bass and guitar line from producer Jake One that sounds like the funkiest spy movie soundtrack imaginable. “Sniper Elite” sees the emcee united with the late J Dilla, and is one of the many tracks featured that has yet to see an official CD release. The album will also feature a never before heard live version of DOOM’s classic “I Hear Voices” from the Operation Doomsday album.

Peppered with his signature comic book dialogue and vintage sound clips, Unexpected Guests presents a treasure trove of DOOM obscurities which should shed light on material that even some hardcore fans may have missed. It’s a frenetic, virtuosic look at a true hip-hop original.

MF Doom has a new name now: DOOM. All caps. He insists. He also wants his album title spelled that way. So just to make sure I keep him happy, I'm going to write this whole news story in all caps.

BACK IN 2007, THE INDIE-RAP ENIGMA SET OFF MASSIVE CONSIPRACY THEORIES...

Jesus Christ. That's so annoying. I can't do it. Sorry.

Back in 2007, the indie-rap enigma set off massive conspiracy theories and even death rumors by allegedly slapping his mask on a skinny imposter and letting that guy do shows while he stayed at home reading back-issues of Alpha Flight or whatever. (Doom's label simply claims that he lost some weight.) Since that time, we've heard barely a peep from him. Given that the guy used to release roughly 58 albums a year, that absence has been noticed.

Well, Doom has now renamed himself DOOM, possibly to distance himself from any worst-rapper-ever reputation I may have given him. And now he's breaking his silence. On March 23, Lex will release BORN LIKE THIS, the first all-new DOOM album in a couple of years. And he's coming back in a pretty big way, with some of the bigger names in the frantic head-knock rap underground on board.

DOOM's frequent collaborator Ghostface Killah, performing as Tony Starks for some reason, guests on one song, as does fellow Wu-Gambino Raekwon. Whatever happened to that planned DOOM/Ghostface full-length? Can that happen, please? Anyway, Jake One produced the appetizingly titled first single "Ballskin", and DOOM used a track from the late stoner-rap deity J Dilla's Donuts album for "Lightworks". (A quick digression re: Donuts: Brandon Soderberg's No Trivia blog has been running a really moving essay series on that album for a couple of weeks now.)
